Tea List Gallery: Green Tea

Green tea takes on huge varieties and forms especially in China. It is also the category with the longest recorded production history. We shall include in this list only varieties where fine qualities can be found. This gallery aims at showcasing visually the range of this tea category. More will be added as we review more varieties. Green teas that are modified, such as those flower-scented and / or crafted ( textured ) ones, are also included in this list.

: This steamed version of Emei Maofeng 峨眉毛峰 is a re-constructed traditional style. Its taste is entirely different from gyokuro: clean, fresh and brisk. It is not as intensely coloured, but its whole-leafness is an attraction that works for me. I think it is a great alternative for those who want steamed green tea but not quite fond of the kind of taste the Japanese group offer.

: Marketed as gyokuro in a prestigious looking and modern teashop with a number of branch stores in cities in China. Notice the glossy surface and much less intense green colour and a different shade of green. Until examined by the trained eye and tasted by the trained palate, this could very well pass for the real thing.

: Gunpowder green tea, export fancy grade 出口特精選級珠茶

: Long’jing 龍井, a flat-roasted tea, is by far the most famous green tea of China. This one from Meijiawu, Hangzhou 杭州梅家塢 20528 | 8768

: Uji Gyokuro 宇治玉露 of a very fine quality “Purple Cloud” grade, a classic representation of premium Japanese steamed green tea.

: Huangshan Maofeng 黄山毛峰 This famous green tea from the Huangshan area is available in many qualities and grade. This is a grade 2 green version. 20571 | 8901

: Tianshan Yinya 天山銀芽 a rare green tea from the Taimushan-Tianshan region in Eastern Fujian. 20554 | 8833

: Silver Needle, but not the authentic white tea. This variation is a green tea in nature. 綠茶版白毫銀針 20551 | 8839

: Mengding Ganlu 蒙頂甘露, a rare green tea from Mengshan, Sichuan 20517 | 8792

: Jingshan Cha 徑山茶, a rare and less well-known premium green tea from the Zhejiang region. 20536 | 8760

: Xu Ri Dong Sheng 旭日東昇, a crafted tea made with apical dabai green tea and the flower of globe amaranth.

: Jasmine Silver Pearls, aka Honey Pearl Pekoe, Moli Xiao Longzhu 茉莉小龍珠, is a premium scented green tea. This one is a premium quality from Fujian

: Zhu-cha 珠茶 Green tea in the bead form is produced in many qualities and grades in many regions. Yongxi Huoqing 涌溪火青, Pingshui Zhucha 平水珠茶 etc are some of the more frequently used names for higher quality ones, export commercial grades are known as Gunpowder in the West. 20547 | 8828

: Yunwu 雲霧, an affordable machine roasted whole leaf green tea produced in many regions in China. This same tea (and many others) has been seen marketed in any famous green tea name: Huangshan Maofeng, Biluo Chun, etc.

: Zhuye Qing green tea 竹葉青 had always been produced in most major green tea regions in Sichuan until a certain company monopolised the name by means of origin claim. All other tea companies, some capable of far better quality, have to use different names. Shihua being a popular one. This one from Mingshan, a traditional famous region.. 20518 | 8786

: Taimu Cuijian 太姥翠劍 A apical bud green tea from the national reserve Taimu Mountain area in Fujian. 20550 | 8800

: jasmine Pearls, aka Jasmine Dragon Pearls or Moli Longzhu 茉莉龍珠 is a crafted jasmine green tea produced in many regions

: Biluo Chun, aka Spring Snail 碧螺春 is most well-known green tea from Jiangsu 20614 | 8956

: A green tea “White Peony”. By definition, White Peony refers only to the genuine white tea. A green tea like this labelled using that same name is intentional mislabelling. Nevertheless, this is a top quality amongst the imitations. It is at least a decent tea.

: Huangshan Maofeng 黄山毛峰 This famous green tea from the Huangshan area is available in many qualities and grade. This is a grade 2, green version. Green version have come about in the recent decade to satisfy the market’s expectation of a greener green tea.

: Huangshan Maofeng 黄山毛峰, original style, premium quality. This is perhaps the most famous baked green tea. Notice that it is more yellow than some other green tea.

: Biluo Chun, 碧螺春 green tea, Minbei 閩北 ( i.e. Northern Fujian) version. 20534 | 8750

: Crafted Green Tea: Green Peony

: Green Tea: Taiping Houkui 太平猴魁 This is a premium “bujian” class

: Dinggu Dafang: Very often local producers refer to this tea as Longjing, because most customers do not know its real name. A Dafang is much more yellowish brown than most other flat-roasted greens. The leaves are larger too, they are not from the fine-leaf Longjing cultivars. They are, however, more like their baked cousin produced in the vacinity — Huangshan Maofeng — another high fire style green tea. Compare the appearance of this tea with other flat-roasted varieties

: Chao Qing, ie Roasted Green 炒青, is a mass market machine roasted green tea

: Anji Baicha 安吉白茶, the famous Zhejiang green tea processed to the flat style with a similar appearance as Longjing. 20155 | 8946

: Longjing, Sichuan version 四川龍井. Many places in China produce green teas of various qualities that are labelled as Longjing. This is a very high quality alternative to the original Hangzhou one. 20519 | 8794
