A friend of mine bought several hundred dollars worth of silver needle tea from someplace in China a couple of years ago…he gave me a couple of bags and I have given up coffee drinking and fell in love with silver needle tea!!

Now that I have run out of it, I am looking for the best place to buy more…the prices for silver needle tea however run from roughly $50/500 grams to more than $200 for the same amount.  My friend swears that he bought his for $25 a pound, although in order to get that price, he had to order about 30 pounds of it.  Any help appreciated sorting out what is best in terms of price, quality, etc.
I am also wondering what, if any impact the radiation from Japan might have on this tea from China?

It sounds like your friend bought the original 30 lbs from a wholesale market. The price was in fact a wholesale/farm price for one of the domestic quality grades in the Mainland 2 years ago. Your friend would have to be somewhere in one of the three major wholesale markets in the south in order to get that price. I don’t believe you can buy at any price lower than that, more so today, when everything has just become more expensive. Not even for the lowest grade.

As for radiation from the nuclear incident in eastern Japan last year, it hardly affected any China soil at all. China is quite a sea away from Japan. The production bases of most tea are in the south, southeast and southwest so they are even further away from the unlucky location. In fact the Japanese has been importing more tea and other farm products from China since.

Retail of Silver Needles in China is one or two times higher than that even in small retail shops in lower rent area. Lower than 400 RMB/500g is unusual or for only poorer qualities. US25/500 g was collection price long ago only for poorer qualities. I don’t think they were able to buy at that price at all.

And so where do I get reasonable quality silver needle tea for a reasonable price?

Silver needle is popularly stocked in teashops all over the world, although in various qualities and pricing. The lower price you said earlier is reasonable if you live in the West, but I do not know what quality it is. It would be nice if you can show a photo with leaf size indication so people in the forum know what you are referring to, at least visually, before they can respond.
