Some days ago I was sitting out in a cafe with some friends when a community old timer of neighbourhood came by for some friendly hand shakes and courtesy chats. He mentioned that he had some old puer cakes that he worried might have some mould growing on them. He’s in his mid-sixty but look more like seventy and with a fragile breath. Heavy eye bags and puffy sinus areas. Heavy mucus in the throat prevented him from speaking with more clarity. I hoped such phlegm not getting into his air ducts. Such a typical case of what TCM common sense known as weak qi and over dominance of humid evils.
Shu puerh is different from sheng puerh in this. Fresh sheng puerh is good in driving away humid evils, but the drinker should have strong stomach.
Sheng puer is good for some people, but definitely not this old gentleman I mentioned. The coldness of this tea would further trap his dampness. He would then develop cold-like symptoms and would be over sensitive to lower temperature and wind. The best solution would be to see a good TCM doctor to first drive out the dampness before any fortification of the qi. Meanwhile he should stay with my tea suggestion, and a healthier life style.
