A reader sent us a question:

I read the article entitled, “Which tea has the most catechins?” at this link – https://www.teaguardian.com/health/Catechins_Ranking_Tea.html#n3.

In the note (3) about Anji Baicha, at the end of the list of teas in descending order of catechins, the following information was provided –

“This is one of the lowest catechins content green tea there is. Produced from a special cultivar of the same name, the total average catechins content is 10.7% of dried weight. Contrast that with Zhenghe Baimudan, 28.2%, or Longjing 18.6%. However, Anji Baicha is one of the most sought after green tea ………”

I would be grateful if you would provide me with link(s) to the scientific report(s) about catechin content of these and the other teas in your list.

In this age of the internet with such info sources as Wikipedia etc, there is easily the illusion that most information of this world can be accessed by a click on the computer. The fact is, a lot aren’t, although the internet does facilitate the searching for the leads to some.
In this case of the catechin datas for various tea varieties, we had to do some information gathering from various college tea student reports, printed books and published researched papers. These are copyrighted materials that one has to buy read and it is illegal to upload them onto the net. In the case of the students’ lab reports, one can’t even buy them but copied as hidden references.
However, in reference to the 3 teas mentioned, the most easily accessible form is a casual reader in Chinese published by Shanghai Cultural Publisher (上海文化出版社), edited by the famous Chinese tea scholar 施海根. The name of the book is 中國名茶圖譜. This is a casual reader so although the information is correct, but very much abridged and incomplete. The related info about tea catechins for these 3 teas are there.

Yes, the materials are in Chinese only. I am sorry that they are. The related percentages are quoted as they are published in the book, which agree with other related scientific papers.

The name of the book can be translated as “A Pictorial Guide for Fine Teas of China” edited by Shi Hai Gen.
