A reader asked the following question and I think it should be shared and answered here:

Hi, I am 6 weeks pregnant. Are there any teas I should avoid? I have Imoerial Ti Kwan Yin, Rose, Jasmine Pearl, Lemongrass and chamomile at home.
      Thank you,
      K

      Hello K,

Usually different people have different health conditions, but since I have to let you know some kind of general guideline, I am supposing that you are an “average” healthy person.
If your Imperial Tieguanyin is the green looking kind, have it only once or twice a week. Avoid it if it is okay with you. Green type Tieguanyin is either cold or very cool in TCM property so it is not good for the early stage of pregnancy, according to traditional Chinese medicine concepts. The next thing to avoid too much is chamomile, which is cool in TCM, but since it is milder, you can have a cup of it a day. Hot only.
If your Tieguanyin is the dark brown type, it can be used like most other tea, ie about 15 to 16g of tealeaves maximum a day for making tea with. 15g of browned Tieguanyin is about 3 teaspoonfuls. That is under the condition that you are not consuming other things also with caffeine. Some common things with caffeine are: chocolate, coffee, cola, or other ‘energy’ drinks.
Jasmine Pearls is about the same as other tea, but since this is a green tea, which consideration is not only about caffeine, but rather its cooler TCM property. Balance your intake of the 15g daily allowance between green, oolong, black, white and puer tea.
Don’t drink your tea when it is cool. Cold is worse.
Lemongrass is TCM warm~hot so don’t drink too much of it either. You want to maintain a relatively stable and balanced TCM condition, otherwise pathogens would find opportunities to invade. You don’t want to get sick at this stage.
Rose is relatively more friendly, though it is less potent as a health drink than tea.
Don’t forget you can put honey and/or a bit of juice in your tea or other infusions. They make a difference during this special time of your life.
I wish you a smooth 9-month and a healthy baby. And a very enjoyable and fruitful parenthood. Do let me know if there are any more questions.

I wish I had learned about this. Anyway, I’d like to share with this reader that since changing my tea habit according to Tea Guardian, my health has improved greatly. My own maternity experience could have been a different one had I knew this site back then. Please continue to drink enough liquid and include good quality tea in it. Sweetening your tea or whatever drink with juice or honey or raw sugar is a good idea when you find yourself reluctant for enough liquid. If you are experiencing morning sickness, Leo’s various ginger recipes are great help.
