ParticipantWhen you have time, please discuss using tetsubin. People are using it as teapot. I think it is only kettle.

ParticipantIm curious about the marketing of mini tetsubin as teapots too. In japan Ive only ever seen them used as kettles. Water boiled in an iron tetsubin is supposed to be healthy, delicious and ideal for tea.
I bought a Chinese electric hotplate that came with what I, at first, thought was an unimpressive, really flimsy, cheap, kettle. Of course I soon found that it was perfect for gong fu tea as it conducts heat very fast, boiling water almost instantly, also it is extremely light so you dont accidentally ‘ding’ the spout against delicate cups and teapots.Tetsubin typically have flat lids that easily slide off and also a metal hinged handle that a) gets very hot and b) is hard to control with precision. I personally like to keep them well away from my gong fu ceramics. -

Participantiron water kettle also difficult to keep no rust. some has coating inside that opposite to why iron kettle is good. you are right it difficult to handle. and always feel dangerous. i use electric water kettle. same as fast, or faster. no waste energy too.

ParticipantI have a small one with coating (glaze?) inside. I was impressed with its look and very unexpected weight. I think because of the thick material. It feels substantial and has a certain sense of safeness with this weight. I used it as a teapot. The problem is the arch handle. When you pour tea, the thickness (or rather thinness) of it makes it difficult to hold tight and since it is hinged, it can swing a little bit when you tilt the teapot. And yes, bebemochi is right, the lid can easily drop out too. That makes me feel very nervous each time I use it. It has now become a decoration 🙁
