The teahouse used to be a social center in old China where people spread gossips, deals were made, differences settled and politics debated. Some scholars equated it as the café of Europe. I doubt in the thoroughly commercialized social fabric that is today, and the internet replaced so many of yesteryear’s social constituents, any tea establishments would play any such social role.

Internet social networks replaced that long ago. However, the teahouse is still very much a social center. Just look at the “cha lau” in your local Hong Kong: they are still a family gathering place, a bouquet center for weddings and birthdays, and where business entertainments are made.

Social issues are discussed where either a more selected segment or a broader audience can be reached, and sometimes can be in greater democratic level than a few persons chatting over a cup of tea.

Glad that social change is not out of date, yet
