I tasted some Dian hong black tea and was amazed by the floral character of it…

Does it all come solely from tea leaves or is it aromatized in some way?

Finer Dianhongs do have an innate floral aroma in them. However, there are also many black selections in the market that the merchants have scented naturally or with additives.

If it comes on too prominently, then it is likely scented.

I have had a Dong Fang Mei Ren tea with amazing aroma and taste. I don’t think it was flower scented. I was told that it was produced in Taiwan with a special process involving some kind of bugs. Are there a lot of black teas in China with similarly wonderful quality? Can you recommend some other choices and some good internet shops for them?

Dong Fang Mei Ren is sometimes referred to as an oolong although technically it is a black tea. It does have a wonderful aroma.

Fujian blacks are well known for their floral character but better ones have gone quite expensive in recent years. You can read about them in the Tea Guardian site:
We have not known any internet shops that carry respectable quality of these. If you’ve found any, please let us know.

One tea that they used to do was to caramelize Yingde black tea with the juice of lychee. That was the once famous and sweetly and florally aromatic Lychee Hong Cha. I cannot find any that is made naturally now, and miss it a bit.
