Hi, recently I bought some White Peony from an internet shop but when I made it for my Chinese visitors they said it’s actually Sau Mei. What is the difference between the two and is one better than the others?
sau mei = new technique white tea = cheap white tea
Sau Mei is usually made from the same kind of tea bushes as those for White Peonies, except that the former kind of tea is processed through a hasted process for oxidizing the leaves. Higher quality ones do have silvery leaf buds like those in White Peony so it is tempting for some traders to sell them as the more expensive version.
So it seems I have been drinking Sau Mei all the time and thought it was White Peony 🙁
This is not unusual. Many teashops in the US are really not that honest, nor knowledgeable of what they are selling.
